The 1980 U.S. suspension of grain sales to the Soviet Union illustrates the importance of the choice of conceptual framework for empirical analysis of international trade problems. A spatial equilibrium model of wheat and coarse grains trade assumes perfect substitution among exporting nations' commodities by importers and, thus, precludes the embargo from having a large impact. The imperfect substitutability assumption of an Armington model results in larger consequences from the embargo. For small shocks, the Armington model better captures the rigidities characteristic of international grain markets. The spatial model provides insights on adjustments to large shocks, but rigidities persist in actual markets. |

The genera of the Aspilota-group are redefined and keyed. One new genus is described: Leptotrema gen. nov.; type-species: Aspilota dentifemur Stelfox, 1943.The genus Dinotrema Foerster, 1862 is given generic status to include the majority of the species of Aspilota auct.; the genus Pterusa Fischer, 1958 is included in the Alysiini. The genus Eusynaldis Zaykov & Fischer, 1982 is synonymized with Aspilota Foerster, 1862 s.s.; Coloboma Foerster, 1862, Prosapha Foerster, 1862 and Synaldis Foerster, 1862 are new synonyms of Dinotrema Foerster, 1862. Synaldis auct. is divided among Aspilota s.s., Eudinostigma Tobias, 1986 and Dinotrema. Aspilota pneumatica Fischer, 1973 is synonymized with Alysia efoveolata Thomson, 1895. Eight new species from Europe are... |

An accurate knowledge of the supply responsiveness of agricultural exporting industries is crucial if sensible judgements are to be made about diverse policy initiatives, including initiatives having no obvious connection with agriculture. In this paper we compare some recent estimates of short-run supply elasticities for agricultural commodities in the Australian economy. Our attention is focussed particularly on the different types of production technologies and econometric methods used to derive values for these elasticities. |

Global climate change from increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide and other trace gases is an issue of international concern. Adverse climate conditions are expected to reduce crop yields and alter the demand for and supply of water. These potential adjustments imply economic costs to agriculture and its constituents. This paper explores possible economic implications for U.S. agriculture, with particular reference to the West. Results from a series of spatial equilibrium model analyses suggest that climate change is not a food security issue for the United States. However, regional adjustments in agricultural production and associated resource use are expected. This implies additional pressure in rural communities. Environmental quality reductions are... |

The yield of skipjack tuna (Katsuwunus pelamis) was investigated. It was found that 2,75kg of fresh tuna are required for the production of every 1kg of canned tuna. Pre-cooking of tuna which is a major processing stage in tuna canning resulted in a loss of about 19% of its weight based on gutted and headed fish. Changes in the quality of canned tuna packed in brine, oil and tomato sauce at ambient and accelerated temperatures were examined by microbiological and sensory evaluation methods. Canned tuna samples were found to be microbiologically stable and organoleptically acceptable after one year storage period. Total viable counts (TVC) were generally low. Thermophilic organisms, anaerobes (clostridium) and coliforms (E. Coli type 1) were absent in... |

The comparative productivity of inputs is often the focus of applied studies of production. For example, one might wish to compare the marginal product of water in irrigation districts to provide guidelines for capital investment in new water projects or to assist in water allocation decisions. The purpose of this note is to illustrate a straightforward econometric method for making such comparisons. It is assumed that panel data are available for T periods on N cross-sectional units and that output is produced according to a stochastic Cobb-Douglas production function. The Cobb-Douglas function was chosen because it has a simple formula for the marginal product and has been found to perform well in studies of agricultural production. The statistical... |
